Will someone remind me what is the theme for the set subject in the PDI Annual
Annual Competition
The Annual Competition is rapidly approaching and it is time to get your images sorted out:
PDI Comp
There are three sections to this competition – Nature, Set Theme (which this year is ‘Dumfries and Galloway’) and Open.
You may enter up to 14 images in total. You can only enter up to 3 in the set theme comp– So for instance you may enter 8 in the Open section, 3 in the Set Theme and 3 in the Nature section.
The web site is not set up to take the entries in automatically so it is back to handing in a CD!!
Please follow these instructions carefully:
Prepare your images as normal.
Images must be titled like this - Durham Mick_01 Waxwing and berries.jpg
Images must be placed in folders –
Create a folder and label it ‘Open’ and inside create another folder and label it with your name – “Surname – first name”. Place you images for the open section in this folder, numbered 01 - ……..whatever.
If you are entering the Nature section repeat this process with a Nature folder containing another folder with your name and your Nature images inside numbered 01 ……. Whatever.
If you are entering the Set Theme section repeat this process with a Set theme folder containing another folder with your name and your Nature images inside numbered 01 ……. Whatever.
Finally copy on to a CD labelled with your name on the disc itself.
Please note that Nature images must not be manipulated so that they are no longer ‘truthful. Images of zoo animals and pets are not allowed.
The final hand in for the PDI comp is Wednesday 6th March.
Print Comp
Rod will add his information within the next couple of days!!
... or eventually
Please see my latest bulletin regarding the hand in date for the PDI entries. Thank you.
I take it that 14 can be entered in the open if not entering in the other categorises
That's right.
Thank you Mick
A final reminder to get your entries in for the PDI section.
To be eligible for the Nature Award you must comply with our Nature definition and you must tick the appropriate box on the entry label.
Prints which have been entered in previous Annual Competitions or Annual Exhibitions which were also our Annual Competition (pre 2011) may not be entered in this competition.
You are expected to enter a wide variety of work and I will list the available trophies shortly.
The judges are all from Chorley PS
Gordon Jenkins
Jane Lines
Dianne Owen
Awards the judges will be asked to make in the Annual Print Competition
Best Monochrome Print This handsome shield was presented by Charles M Ross in 1956 for the Winning Print in the Annual Exhibition. It is now presented for the Best Monochrome Print in the Annual Print Competition
Nature John Harries cup for the Best Photograph of the natural world in the Annual Print Competition. John Harries was a pilot with KLM. He retired to Dumfries and took up photography. He photographed a range of subjects but was particularly keen on Nature. The inscription on the cup was deliberately worded in case there was no nature entry in the annual exhibition.
Best Sport or Action Print This is a unique wooden trophy using marquetry to emblazon the Club Logo in coloured veneers. It was made and donated by Jennifer Allen's father, Simon Allen's father-in-law, and is awarded for the Best Sport or Action Print in the Annual Print Competition.
Best Still Life This "nail sculpture" of a photographer was brought from San Francisco by Rod Wheelans and is presented for Best Still Life in the Annual Print Competition.
Best Contemporary Print To commemorate Dumfries Camera Club hosting the Scottish Salon 1993 and presented for the most imaginative or best contemporary print in the Annual Exhibition.
I think Sandy Robertson won the Johnston Trophy? He might have won photo journalism as well.
Hi, I have the Warwick cup (record/ photo journalism) will bring in tonight. Sandy.
I think John McLean won best beginner print?
Final polish done & ready to hand back on Wednesday.
I have most of this info. It took a while to sort out last year, but it was done. Will get the list today from my old computer and pass it on - I have asked for cups to be brought in and I can start checking off. I have a couple here and there are some left in the cupboard. From memory the fancy much sort after mono print trophy that Anne won last year was missing and on the night of the presentation it was the only trophy missing - then Anne, when given only a peck on the cheek and a handshake declared she still had it at home!
Thanks to everyone who has updated our trophy lists.
Hand In please on 27 March or 3 April.
I hope this is of some help to you as none of them have been listed. Eustace Senior trophy M Elliot after a little research in the cupboard I also came up with this information, Presidents Tankard M Durham, Syd Ball A Greiner, Criffel Goblet A Greiner, Washington Lamp A Greiner, Nithdale Cup R Wheelans,
Since there is no entry form and therefore no list to check against I am worried about prints getting mixed up with other stuff in our cupboard so the First Hand In is 27 March. If you HAVE to hand in before that then give them to somone else or you can bring them to my house at 43 Lovers Walk.
The PDI comp has now been proicessed - please see my bulletin for the running orders.
Despite several people insisting that the Annual Hand In date was last Wed it clearly states above that the first hand in should have been 27 March. With the barracking I got confused too and said next Wed would be the Final Hand In but this will in fact be Wed 3 April.
We were only doing what we were told on the syllabus entry! We're like lemmings you know.
Well done Mr Findlay top marks!!
Have you ever seen somebody get so lucky so many times!!! (meaning Ian of course!)
Yes, luck was on my side today, I think! Surely some of them were just good images though? Anyway, if it wasn't for the generous encouragement of others and the relentless competitiveness of Mr Rae and a certain Mr Main I wouldn't have tried so hard.
Well done Ian! Great results. Margaret too and our Nature dynamic Duo. A pity there weren't a few more members present. QOS supporters are, of course, excused.
Thanks, gob smacked, great year for you Ian, well done and to every one who got awards and comendations, plus the members who entered because no entries no competition. Thanks to all the crew who made it work.
Yes well done to all who won, I think all the pics yesterday were worthy winners. It will be interesting to see what happens next year in Nature when Mick and Edmund will have yet another Nature specialist picking up the challenge (I hope).
Thanks to Rod's organising team and the judges for an excellent event.
The point about a low turn-out is a valid one. I'm guilty of only making it for the morning's show and had to miss the afternoon's event which I'm quite gutted about. If you haven't seen the salon style judging before then you really ought to and I can't understand why the hall wasn't full of members!? The three judges made it all the way from Chorley and our membership can't even make it to Iselsteps!! I'm sure everybody has their own perfectly valid reason - as I did for the second half of the day. Or maybe it was a missed opportunity for most. It really is great fun to watch and I even dragged Rachel along and she quite enjoyed it too. Do the membership think the club publicised this event enough? Did you know it was on?
Ian, I don't think it could have been more publicised, the only thing I can remember mentioning more this year was Irene Froy's workshop :)
What would be a more interesting exercise would be to cross-reference the names of those who entered against those that were there. My feeling was that there were less entries than I thought would be there. When Gordon (Judge, not Rae) asked me on Sat night how many prints there would be I guesstimated 300+, based on the fact I thought around 30 members would enter 10 or so each. Do we know how many different authors there were from the score list?
Surely it has to be one of the easiest comps to enter, plenty of time, free and as all you need to do is pick some of your images from you previous hand-ins.
One factor could be that it was the end of the first week of Easter hols so there's a chance a lot were away.
You mentioned it a lot Jim and I thought we were quite thorough ... my thoughts were that I should have stolen the 'Featured' block on the home page to plug it as well, as a reminder. People just forget I think.

Don't forget you must use the correct labels - which will help at least in identifying an Annual print from others:
