PAGB AWARDS FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC MERIT

Wed 6 Jan 2016 7:30pm

Even if you are not interested in an Award for yourself there will be loads of great pictures to look at and, if you are interested, all (or at least some) of the information you need.  We could run an extra night if anyone would like to see more and perhaps bring a few of your own pictures to see if you are in the "ballpark".  Anyone interested?

Club Draw - Returns for 2016

First draw of the year, and the prize pot starts at £10.50; please bring your £1s and have a modest flutter. Happy New Year and Good Luck.

And a happy new Year to you Catherine, and thanks for doing the Club Draw each week

Did anybody else think the 'C' level was brilliant and the 'D' level was a load of rubbish?

So much of the D was heavy PS creative. I really like creative stuff - I do a lot of it myself. It just seemed to me that 90% of it was done 'creatively' in order to gain that D standard. And it wasn't even done that well imho :o) Floating things, appalling cut-outs, bad perspective, bad composition, dreadful colour balance between pasted items. My thoughts are a bit controversial I guess. I just think that several poor images blended together doesn't then make a good one. Still - on the flip side many of them were brilliantly done and maybe the poor ones got low marks.

I am inclined to agree Ian.  There were some cracking, and very enjoyable, photographs in the 'C' section but the second half felt like an assessment of PS techniques.  There were some stunning composites that told a story but others felt like random characters pasted onto Beamish street scenes.  As you say, they may have had low scores - but there were a lot of them.  Will be interested to hear other views.

Is is good that people allow their work to be put onto these shows but it would be useful to see more of the individual scores - especially in complete panels where some scored below 20.

Is there a rule that says that all creative shots must contain one or more crows / rooks / ravens?

Good to see that last night has invoked some response. I'm with Ian and Maybeth on this. Just glad I have done mine!!

I'm drawn to wildlife more and more these days. Just wish I had the gear for it - we know no talent required ;o)

Curses - you've worked it out.

I'm picking up on Maybeth's comment here and i've just had a thought!

If members were interested in seeing complete panels of work, i have my succesful CPAGB and DPAGB prints in a box.

You could see the whole range of scores, highs and lows, it would maybe give an idea of the levels required.

Although i should say (and Rod will probably tell you this too) trends and standards shift slightly in time, my CPAGB is 4 years old now and my DPAGB 2 years old. (ps, there was no nature in my C panel) so that might also be of interest...

It would be really useful to see actual prints.

We can chat with Rod about maybe having a night about this where, as John McVie said interested members can bring along some work for some advice... One thing that should be noted at C and D levels that there can be a waiting list to get into an adjudication, November one is in Scotland and i believe there is a lot of interest in it...

So members considering this should be acting soon..
